Bloody Roar: Extreme
The humans and Zoanthropes were involved in intense fighting and hence, a new kingdom was born. The new kingdom promised peace and equal rights for all and so this new land attracted many Zoanthropes who were looking to put all the violence behind them. But alas, this promise of peace was nothing more than a lie. Dark rumors began to fly about cruel experiments being conducted on the Zoanthropes in an attempt to discover the secret of their ability to change into beasts. Even though everyone was against such experiments, no one could actually prove that they were going on. To showcase their military might and to put the minds of ther citizens at ease, the kingdom sponsored a Zoanthrope fighting tournament. The winner would win the title of "Zoanthrope Champion" and a nice cash price... but the participants would eventually discover the true nature of the tournament...
Bloody Roar: Extreme (BRE) has seven game modes. Arcade, Versus, Time Attack, Survival, Team Battle, Vs Team Battle, and Training Mode. You all should know what those mean... if you don't then I suggest you all hit the books! The game consists of fourteen unique characters who each has the ability to transform into a beast. A few examples of the beast are a lion, a tiger, a wolf and a rabbit... although I don't know how you can call a bunny a beast.
Controlling your character in BRE is extremely simple, so simple that a five year old can start kicking your ass in ten minutes, tops. Simple isn't necessarily a bad thing, it is actually a very good thing. While most other fighters have this fetish that they have to use every single button on the pad to provide depth, BRE does the exact opposite and focuses only on a few buttons. The Left and Right Triggers are used to side-step. The Left Thumbstick or D-Pad are used to move your character. The Y button is for heavy blocks and throws while the A button is for kicking. The B and Black buttons are used to transform into your alter-ego beast form while the X button is used to punch. Very easy!
As far as visuals go, BRE shines! It has this look to it that is similar in style to Dead or Alive 3... which is a good thing. Environments are extremely well done with great attention to detail and design. You'll fight in many different and unique locations such as the landing area of airplanes. Characters are nicely modeled and are animated well. With a great variety of moves that they can pull off, they look good doing each and everyone of them. Not to mention that the special effects that occur when they transform into beasts are awesome! Overall, Bloody Roar: Extreme is one of the nicest looking fighting games on the Xbox.
Not much to say about the sound.... after all it is a fighting game, not many sounds to go around. You got your mandatory martial arts shouting and your grunts and groans. Nothing special. Same goes for the background music, it can get repetitive and annoying at times. Nothing really ground breaking that hasnt already been done in other fighting games. It gets the job done.
Oh and one last thing before I leave... BRE only costs $30 brand new! For the great visuals and easy to pick up gameplay and overall value, $30 is a bargain! Overall, Bloody Roar: Extreme can sit right along side my copy of Dead or Alive 3 any day.
Report Card:
Gameplay = 8.5
Graphics = 8.5
Audio = 7
Replay Value = 8
Overall: 8.5/10
