News: Tom Morello stars in Guitar Hero III
Activision has announced that Tom Morello, from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, will guest star as a boss character in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Click here to read the article.

Dr. Muto

This game by Midway is done well. Well enough to stand hand in hand with the top dogs, Oddworld and Blinx. While many may dismiss Dr. Muto as a regular platformer, it is more than that. Dr. Muto takes the platform genre and adds in its own unique features that make it stand out.

The story follows a mad scientist who messes up... big time! The point of the game is to go to 4 planets and recover pieces to build something to fix your big mistake. Throughout your adventure you will come across a variety of bad guys. Spiders, guard dogs, and robots, just to name a few. To beat these bad guys, you have your trusty remote control that has been altered by Dr. Muto. It allows him to transform into other animals, such as a rat in order to pass certain areas in a level.

I was surprised at how big the worlds were. Just when you think it is over, you come across an entire new and different section! But soon you will come to the end of a world and you will have to do battle with a boss. Each boss is different and each has its ups and downs. Take your time and take them down!

To survive, you will need hearts. Each level has 20 hearts which will add a permanent heart to your life if you collect them all. You start off with 3 hearts and they are depleted depending on just how brutal the attack of enemy was. If it was a hard hit, then you will most likely lose an entire heart. If it was a weak hit, you will probably lose half a heart. If you die, you will not continue at the point where you died but at a point designated by the game that is close to where you died so you wont have to pass en entire level all over again if you are killed.

The controls in Dr. Muto are easy to learn. You have your attack buttons and your jump and mutate buttons. Nothing fancy. Easy enough to master in a few minutes. The only downside at times is the camera, it will sometimes be at an odd angle.

Visually, Dr. Muto's graphics are nothing special for the Xbox. They are graphics you would see in a PS2 game, which is probably what happened. The game was programmed for the PS2 then ported over to the Xbox. The level design is well done. Dr. Muto has is own style. No castles and plumbers here, Dr. Muto is a darker game aimed at Teens and adults. The character design varies greatly. Enemies and bosses all look different and have their own style and all the characters that Dr. Muto morphs into are equally unique and well done.

Sound wise, voice acting in Dr. Muto is average with his partner, AL, getting annoying at times. Dr. Muto's comments also get repetitive at times but they are occasionally entertaining. Soundtrack is average music you'd expect and the sound effects do their job nicely. Nothing special, but definitely not bad.

Overall, with a bit more polish, Dr. Muto could have been great, instead it ends up being good. Nothing more than a port.. but a port of a good game. I just wish they would have used the full power of the Xbox. Dr. Muto is a fun game that is unique and entertaining. You should give it a chance.
