Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick
When ambitious journalist Trisha Pettywood and occult author Alex Eldrige team up to try to expose the mystery of famed Professor Knowby's murder, they unwittingly open a Vortex to the undead. As the deadites swarm through Dearborn they turn humans into the undead and the town is quickly overrun. Now, with Dearborn in chaos and citizens begging for help, Ash must hack and slash his way through the streets and figure out how to close the Vortex.
Using your chainsaw, shotgun, a shovel, and many more weapons you will have to kick Deadite ass and save Dearborn. Gameplay is pretty straight-forward, just hack and slash your way through while occasionally solving a puzzle or looking for a key.
Controls are pretty straight forward. The Left Thumbstick is used for movement while the Right Thumbstick controls the camera. The D-Pad brings up the HUD (Heads-Up Displau). The Right Trigger brings up the spell book so you can cast a spell. The Left Trigger is used to target the Deadites (bad guys). The X button is for you left-handed weapon attack while the A button is for your right-handed weapon attack. The B button is used to block and cast spells. The Y button is used to taunt, begin a conversation, and to view 'Info' icons/spells. The Black and White buttons are used to bring up your weapons list. Last but not least, you bring up your inventory by pressing the Back button.
Visually Evil Dead won't win any awards anytime soon. The graphics are just plain boring. Evil Dead's environments are dull and repetitive with little life. Everything looks so square and flat. I don't know what happened here... probably the fact that this game was going to be a $20 game, meaning the budget probably was bad so they just said "Oh well" and gave up. Character models are average at best and the Deadites tend to repeat often. Thankfully Ash's model is done quite nicely with a nice amount of detail. As far as the visual gore goes in Evil Dead... there is plenty of it! Blood splatters and pieces of Deadites fly all over the place. Definitely one of the goriest games available.
Now, onto the sound section of our review. This game wouldn't be an authentic Evil Dead game if the star of the films, Mr. Bruce Campbell, didn't lend his voice to the game. Thankfully he does which makes the game more enjoyable. His one-liners are delivered greatly and are hilarious. As far in game sounds go, they are nothing special. They are a bit repetetive and dull most of the time. The music is a little better. It is dynamic meaning if there is no danger then the music is calm but once the Deadites start attacking, the music kicks in adequately.
Overall, Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick is an OK game that should be rented if not bought... it's only $20 brand new. Although there are other similar games that are much better (Hunter: The Reckoning) the game does give an enjoyable experience the first time through but you probably won't put the game back in for round two.
