MX Superfly
There haven't really been any good dirt bike games recently. With the exception of Excitebike, the whole dirt bike genre has been a quiet one. Now comes MX Superfly with great gameplay, graphics, and sound and will hopefully give the dirt bike genre a much needed boost into mainstream.
MX Superdly features 14 riders and 22 tracks that vary in location and style. Along with that, there are 11 mini-games that will have you delivering pizzas, playing Horse, and a MX version of golf! With all this MX Superfly has replay value written all over it!
The control in MX Superfly is pretty easy to get down. You move your dirt bike with the left thumbstick, accelerate by pressing down the A button, and brake by pressing the B button. If you tap the B button, you will do a small slide and if you press in the left thumbstick, you will do a big slide. Helpful when doing sharp turns. To perform tricks you press the Right Trigger and press a face button. Holding the Right Trigger will also boost your jump. Timed correctly, you will get some mad air!
Tricks vary greatly and are pretty simple to pull off and chain together. Supermans, seat grabs, fakies, back flips, lazy boys, its all here and all at your finger tips. The whole Right Trigger plus face buttons (A, B, X, Y) to pull off tricks really works well. You'll find yourself constantly trying to bust insane moves, each crazier than the last one you landed.
With MX Superfly, you wont have to worry about all the technicallity of dirt bikes. The game is a mix of sim and arcade, leaning more into the arcade section which makes this game so much fun to play. So don't be afraid, go big!
The main thing in MX Superfly is the Career Mode. You create a player and start as a rookie, earning money in order to compete and move up in ranks. This is also the way to unlocking all of the tracks. Speaking of tracks, if you have Xbox Live, you will have access to 2 extra tracks! If you don't then you are screwed, sorry.
Along with Career Mode, there is Multiplayer which supports 2 players in split screen. You can race on any of the tracks that you have unlocked and also go through the mini-games. Unfortunately there is no Xbox Live online play which is a real shame. This game is perfect for Xbox Live!
If this isn't enough for you, there is a Track Editor that will allow you to create your own course and play through it. The interface for the Track Editor could have used a bit more work though, as the PC-ish interface doesn't cut it. Overall, the Track Editor wont give Tony Hawk's Editor a run for its money but it is on its way. With some more polish, it could have been amazing. Instead it gives you something to play around with for a couple hours. Take it or leave it.
Visually, MX Superfly is above average. Running at 30 frames per second, MX Superfly doesn't experience any lag or freeze-ups. All of the tracks are well designed and vary in design and style. Some levels are barren with dirt and rocks, also known as a desert. Other tracks are located in cities and green fields. Riders are modeled nicely and animated well as you perform tricks. The dirt bikes all resemble their real life couterparts which is a big plus. Overall, MX Superfly is a winner in the visual department.
Now for all you sound freaks. MX Superfly's audio runs in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. You'll hear bikes roar past you and music blazing in the background as you bust out trick after trick. Sound effects could have used a bit of work though. You'll mainly hear the announcer shout "Yeah!" when you land a trick which gets annoying. Soundtrack wise, MX Superfly features bands such as Hoobstank, The Vandals and more! If you don't like any of these then use your own custom soundtrack!
Overall, MX Superfly is the best dirt bike game yet! Great and addictive gameplay, coupled with great graphics and good sound make for a great game. Hopefully, there is a sequel in the works!
Report Card:
Gameplay = 9
Graphics = 8.5
Audio = 8
Replay Value = 9
Overall: 8.5/10
