Quantum Redshift
Holy crap! That's probably the first thing you will say once you unlock the fastest mode in Quantum Redshift. If ever there was a fastest game, this is it. But don't worry newbies, if you are scared of the speed, you won't have to face it until you beat the slower modes... by that time you'll be begging for it!
Quantum Redshift has 4 racing options. They are: Tournament, Time Attack, Quick Race, and Multiplayer. In Tournament you will race through all the 16 stages and battle it out against your nemesis while you unlock new characters, stages and difficulties. Time Attack has you racing against your ghost. No weapons, no other racers. Just you and speed. Quick Race is just that, a quick race against 5 of your worst enemies and this time weapons are allowed. Multiplayer... I think you can all guess is for up to 4 players to race in split-screen.
The controls in Quantum Redshift are easy as pie. The right trigger is used to accelerate your ship while your left trigger is used to brake. For movement, you can use either the D-Pad or the Left Thumbstick. The A button is used for a Turbo boost, the Y button is to activate your shield while the B and X buttons are your weapons. To see if someone is closing in on you, simply press the white button for rear-view. Finally, the black button is used to switch between camera views. So simple, yet so effective. Racing at its finest.
Visually, Quantum Redshift doesn't dissapoint -- does anything from Microsoft Game Studios ever dissapoint? Um, don't answer that. Seriously though, Quantum Redshift is dressed to impress. You can tell a great game when you are blazing at speeds of 900 MPH and the gameplay never slows down. Ships are nicely modeled with attention to detail. Characters each have their own look although you only see them in the cut-scenes which could have used more work -- they're just too plain... how exciting is it to see two characters standing and talking to each other before each race ... boring! The environments are beautifully done, each with its own different look, length, and difficulty. Great variety help Quantum Redshift in the visuals department.
Sound wise, let me start off with what you all love to hear. Quantum Redshift allows you to choose your own soundtrack! Yes, no more of that crappy techno music that has been infecting videogames lately. You wan't to rock out while you race, go for it... you wan't to sing along to The Beatles' catchy tunes while kicking some nemesis ass? Be my guest! I don't know why more companies use this great Xbox feature, hint hint! The sounds in the game are nothing special; you got your ship doing its thing and your weapons with their explosions and whatnot... nothing that will revolutionize the gaming industry but it gets the job done.
With 16 characters, 5 difficuty levels, and 16 courses; Quantum Redshift offers lots of replay value and let's not forget multiplayer. Easy controls, great visuals, good sound make Quantum Redshift a must for any racing fanatic. Don't come to Quantum Redshift expecting the tight controls of a car in Project Gotham Racing though... think WipeOut! then multiply that by 10 and you begin to touch upon the Quantum Redshift experience.
Report Card:
Gameplay = 9
Graphics = 9
Audio = 8.5
Replay Value = 8.5
Overall: 8.8/10
