Red Dead Revolver
Welcome to the Wild West, where you are the lone bounty hunter looking to take out them pesky varmint causing havoc in small towns. Red Dead Revolver is a story about betrayal and revenge. Red's (the main character) father is betrayed by a business partner and killed in front of young Red, who would have been taken out himself had he not shot the enemy in the arm, dismembering it. Now, Red is all grown up and he's looking for the man with one arm (The Fugitive anyone?). On this search for the one arm bandit, Red takes out all the scumbags he encounters on his search for clues that will lead him to the truth behind the betrayal.
Red Dead Revolver's game play is decent and somewhat original. The different guns are cool, but it is really hard to see the difference between the weapons and the usefulness of them. The player can pretty much get away with using the latest rifle they receive throughout the game, without needing to switch weapons. On the creative side, Red Dead Revolver's showdowns are fairly fun but too easy. Once you figure out that the head shot is the key, the game becomes far too simple.
A refreshing look from all the other console games, Red Dead Revolver has a hazy dust like appearance that give the feeling you are watching an old wild west movie (or watching "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"). Being ported over through other consoles, the graphics could use a little more polishing but that is what happens when a game is made using the less-powerful console and then ported.
The music of Red Dead Revolver has a double edged sword tone to it. The sounds are reminiscent of the film Kill Bill Vol. 2, an urban western if you will. While this may sound cool, it destroys the old west feel of the game. Bring on the Clint Eastwood standoff whistle sound. On a positive note, the voice acting was up to par and the sound effects sound like Mom and Dad's old western movies which is a definite plus.
If it wasn't for how short this game is, this game would have been a great buy for any western fan. You'll rent this game on Friday only to return it on Sunday... after beating it twice! (the game, that it). The replay value of this game is mediocre and the multiplayer is fun for about an hour with your friends until it gets old, which it manages to do quite quickly. To sum up this review, I'll leave you with a simple phrase which we've all used ourselves: "It was fun while it lasted!"
Report Card:
Gameplay = 8
Graphics = 7.5
Audio = 7.5
Replay Value = 5
Overall: 7/10
