Robotech: Battlecry

For those of you who do not know what Robotech is and why all the fuss, let me explain. Robotech was and is one of the most famous anime shows ever! Anime is japanese animation like pokemon, dragonball, etc. There were high expectations for this game due to the license; did TDK live up to the Robotech name or did they fall short of greatness? Well, let's begin!

Gameplay wise, Robotech is a love it or hate it game. In the Robotech world you control robots called Veritechs who can morph into Battloid, Guardian, or Fighter mode. With 3 different morphing possibilities comes 3 different controller setups. It might take some time to get used to the controls but you'll have them down in one hour, tops!

Now onto the graphics section of the review. If you may have noticed there was a sudden 'Cel-Shading' burst in the games industry. Many games even the Zelda series decided to hop on the 'cel wagon'. But with a cartoon license, using Cel Shading for Robotech makes perfect sense. The visuals in Robotech are very well done but in some cases might seem a bit repetitive. All in all, a job well done. Characters and levels are nicely rendered in 'cartoon style' that resembles the show so closely that you might think you're watching a re-run.

Robotech's sound is very well implemented. The same sounds and soundtrack, along with the same voice acting, are used in the game giving it that extra touch of authenticity. The best time to enjoy the rich sounds are in the middle of a shoot-out, meaning you against 20 + enemies all shooting at the same time, missiles soaring past you, bombs bursting, and the commander shouting at you to be careful!

There are a total of 25 missions, each harder than the last, to complete which will keep you busy for quite some time. If that doesn't satisfy you, there are lots of things to unlock, such as medals and new suits along with interviews with the voice actors! All in all, this is a job well done. Definitely worth a try and if you like it, buy it! You won't be dissapointed.

Report Card:
Gameplay = 8
Graphics = 8.5
Audio = 8.5
Replay Value = 9
Overall: 8.5/10
