Starsky & Hutch
If you are old enough, you will remember the incredibly popular TV series from the 70’s titled ‘Starsky & Hutch’ -- a no-brainer show who’s main draw was the action. Chases and shoot-outs were featured in pretty much every episode.
Starsky drives the show’s famous car, the Ford Torino, aka "The Striped Tomato". Hutch is in charge of shooting out of the right car window. You’ll play through 18 episodes of TV-inspired action and 3 TV specials; Stunt Special, Racing Special, and Shooting Special.
While in Story mode, the game progresses along nicely with the use of 2D art that will remind you of Flash cartoons that you see online.
Missions are all pretty much just Drive and Shoot missions. You drive around the 100 miles of Bay City chasing down the bad guys and shooting them down.
Controls are straight-forward and simple. Use the triggers to accelerate and brake and the Left Thumbstick to steer. A is used to shoot. If you have a Light Gun, you can use it. Although you’ll need 2 players. One to drive and one to shoot.
Visually, Starsky & Hutch isn’t the most attractive game out there. But it isn’t the ugliest either. It falls in the "good enough" category. Cars are varied, all with "good enough" detail. Cities are nicely modeled with lots of detail. The city is huge. The least impressive of the visuals are the character models. They look straight out of a Dreamcast game.
As far as sound goes. It is lacking. The only thing that somewhat redeems it is the actual voice of Antonio Fargas, who played "Huggy Bear" on the Starsky & Hutch show. Sound effects are dull and generic and the music tends to get annoying. Even though today’s music probably wouldn’t seem right for a 1970’s game, having the Custom Soundtrack option would have scored the Audio higher.
Overall, Starsky & Hutch, with "good enough" visuals, is a decent game that will provide you with some trills. It might get repetitive so a rental would be best, unless you can find this game on sale, say for $19.99 -- then it is a good buy.
Report Card:
Gameplay = 7
Graphics = 6.5
Audio = 6
Replay Value = 7
Overall: 7/10
