The Great Escape

The game that could have been, isn't! What do you get when you take a great classic Steve McQueen film and turn it into a game 30 years later. You get The Great Escape, a poor quality game that doesn't deserve the Great Escape name. This game could have been great, instead it ends up a poorly produced and rushed title that will unfortunately fade away without anyone even noticing it, or shall I say without anyone even caring.

The story goes like this: You were shot out the skies and had to evacuate your plane. Unfortunately for you when you finally descended on land those damn Nazis were waiting for you to take you prisoner. Just your luck, it wasn't bad enough that you were prisoners but you would be shot on the spot should you made the slightest attempt at escaping. But you have to escape because sooner or later you will mostly likely be executed. You will have to join forces with the other captured Allies and break free and take down those stupid Nazis while you're at it!

The game mostly focuses on sneaking around taking object needed to escape such as a passport or a shovel. Later on in the game you get to drive vehicles and use weapons. Mostly just gathering items though which gets a bit repetitive especially since it's Game Over if a Nazi spots you. It doesn't help that the camera doesn't always work the way it should.

Controls in The Great Escape are straightforward. Move with the Left Thumbstick while you move the camera with the Right. A is your action button, B allows you to crouch and lie down, Y opens you inventory, Right Trigger is used to fight/fire weapon while the Left Trigger is used to go into Stealth Mode. Using the D-Pad, you can peek around corners.

Visually, The Great Escape looks like an early PS2 game, no joke. There should be a law that requires developers to take advantage of a console's power. Characters are blocky and stiff. Environments are for the most part bare. Textures and bland and boring. Nothing in the game makes it shine visually. A true shame.

Sound is another part of the game that doesn't shine. Nazi accents are just plain pathetic. How hard is it to find a real German person to do the voice. If Arnold Schwarzenneger's dad were still alive then the developers could have used him, the real Nazi deal. (Cheap shot against Arnold -- don't you just love free speech?) The rest of the voice-overs are nothing special either. Sound effects are bare and repetitive. Alarms, and screaming Nazis is what you'll hear most of the time.

Overall, The Great Escape is not worth a purchase. It is a game that could have been great if they had actually spent time on it not just trying to cash in on the The Great Escape name. In the end, The Great Escape ends up as being a game that will be in the budget bin of your local game store within three months, tops!
