Zapper
The story for Zapper goes like this; You have a little brother, Zipper, who has been kidnapped by Maggi the Magpie and naturaly you have to save him. He is after all your little brother. Not much of a story but it's enough to get things going and motivate you to pass the game.
Now, let me start off by saying, "AHHH!" That is what you will say the most when you play Zapper. This game is what I like to call Frogger on steroids. It takes the classic gameplay and fun from the Frogger series and sets itself apart with its frantic pace and fun factor. Now back to the "AHHH!" thing, the reason you will say this is because with Zapper it is non-stop action as you try and beat each level but the thing is you will die a lot of times. Trust me, you will. But this isn't a bad thing. Sure you might get a bit frustrated by it but once you pass a level in which you died 20 times you'll cheer in delight! It makes you experience those classic, "Yes! I did it!" gaming moments.
The controls in Zapper are nicely implemented and easy to use. You'll have them down in 10 minutes, tops. You hop one step everything you move the left stick forward. To move more than one step, you move the stick more than one time. So if you want to go forward five times, you push the left stick forward 5 times and Zapper will hop... 5 times. Nothing to it, yet very nice. The game isn't just hop and go, along the way you will have to avoid enemies and obstacles. The goal for each level is to find and break 6 evil eggs. Once you get the 6th one, the level finishes and you go onto the next one. Along the way you will also collect white sphere 'coins' and discover hidden areas within each level.
Aside from story mode, Zapper has an Arcade mode and a Multiplayer mode. The goal in arcade is to beat the levels in a certain amount of time. In multiplayer, which can support up to 4 players, your goal is to catch Zipper before any of your competition does. And if you don't like the original rules in multiplayer, you can tweak them to your liking, just like in Halo.
Visually Zapper is nicely done, while not revolutionary, the visuals are in the 'normal' category. The worlds are in 3D and vary in style and are all nicely colored. Zapper is nicely modeled as are the enemies you will encounter. Visuals aren't great, but they are good.
The sound in Zapper is what you would expect from a 'cute' game such as Zapper. Its a soundtrack of techno-ish/party music... you know, the ones that are all done on a computer. Its a hit or miss with this one, you either like it or you dont. But some of the songs are a bit catchy, so beware. Certainly would have been nice to use a custom soundtrack.
With 4 worlds consisting of a total of 18 different levels, story, arcade, and multiplayer modes, Zapper provides are worthwhile experience that should definitely not be missed. If you don't buy it, be sure to rent it. Overall, Zapper is a nice game that's perfect for the kids and adults alike. Beware though, its addicting!
